Shadowy interests tied to the central bank were almost certainly behind the effort.<\/p>\n However, Jackson survived and went on to \u201cEnd the Fed\u201d of his days.<\/p>\n He successfully bested the central bank\u2014and the powerful interests behind it\u2014and shut down the Second Bank of the United States.<\/p>\n He also repaid the federal debt in full, which was no easy task.<\/p>\n Jackson couldn\u2019t squeeze the American people with a federal income tax to repay the debt.<\/p>\n It didn\u2019t exist at the time and would have been unconstitutional.<\/p>\n He also couldn\u2019t simply print currency to pay off the debt.<\/p>\n Perpetuating such an insane fraud\u2014which the Fed does on a massive scale today\u2014likely never entered his mind.<\/p>\n Instead, Jackson had to rely on tax revenue from other sources, mainly import tariffs and excise taxes, to pay down the debt.<\/p>\n He also drastically cut federal spending and frequently vetoed spending bills.<\/p>\n Jackson\u2019s determination worked.<\/p>\n By January 1835, the US was debt-free for the first time.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, it didn\u2019t last much more than a year. After that, the US would never again be debt-free\u2014not even close.<\/p>\n Revenge of the Central Bankers<\/p>\n After Jackson succeeded in ending the Second Bank of the United States, anything associated with a central bank became deeply unpopular with the American public.<\/p>\n So, central bank advocates tried a new branding strategy.<\/p>\n Rather than call their new central bank the \u201cThird Bank of the United States,\u201d they went for a vague and boring name.<\/p>\n They called it \u201cthe Federal Reserve\u201d and managed to hide it from the average person in plain sight.<\/p>\n As a result, over 100 years since its founding, most Americans have no idea what the Federal Reserve is or what it actually does.<\/p>\n Ironically, Jackson\u2019s face has been on the $20 \u201cFederal Reserve Note\u201d since 1928.<\/p>\n So in a sense, this symbolic move is central banking advocates giving the middle finger to one of their most steadfast opponents.<\/p>\n After
